Web1 mei 2024 · Heme is a tetradentate ligand made up of a large, aromatic porphyrin ring with four pyrrole nitrogens and a ferrous, or Fe (II), ion at the center. The 4 nitrogens from the porphyrin ring of heme allow it to serve as a tetradentate chelator for the Fe (II) ion, and since they are in a ring, it is also influenced by the macrocycle effect.
